Field Trips Made Easy

Everyone has a favorite field trip memory, and with good reason. Well established research shows these excursions boost academic engagement, improve long-term memory retention, and develop social-emotional skills like empathy and collaboration, ultimately leading to higher test scores and a lifelong love of learning. Fueled by our love

of learning at the Bavarian Blacksmith Experience, we've developed a new affordable and easy option to add to your field trip favorites.

The Bavarian Blacksmith Experience in Frankenmuth, Michigan, makes an exceptional school field trip that transforms abstract history, art, and science lessons into an immersive, hands-on kinesthetic learning adventure. Instead of passively watching a demonstration, students step into the role of an apprentice, working directly with raw materials to shape steel under expert supervision. This unique combination of art, history and STEM enables Michigan educators to overcome high bussing and admission costs by utilizing several state-sponsored grants, conservation funds, and museum-specific travel subsidies dedicated to these fields of study. We invite all interested educators to contact us directly with any way that we may assist your efforts in obtaining grant money for your students.

We provide customizable and specialized Field Trip Packages that bring standard classroom curricula to life through the following educational benefits:

Living History and STEM Engagement

  • Historical Immersion: Students receive an educational overview of ancient and modern trade lingo, tools, and the vital role blacksmiths played in society.

  • Practical Science: The experience illustrates real-world metallurgy, thermodynamics, and the physical science behind heating, tapering, twisting, and quenching steel.

  • Left and Right Brain Engagement: Combining the precise calculations of physical mechanics with creative metal artistry helps maximize students' long-term knowledge retention.

Character Development and Life Skills

  • Confidence Boosting: Overcoming the initial intimidation of working with fire and heavy tools builds immense personal resilience.

  • Critical Thinking: Students are required to solve spatial puzzles on the anvil, encouraging quick problem-solving and focus.

  • Tangible Accomplishment: Every participant takes home a hand-forged heirloom memento (such as a pendant, magic wand, or chopsticks) that serves as a permanent reminder of their capability.

Accessible and Structured Group Design

  • All Equipment Provided: The venue supplies all necessary materials, machinery, and safety gear, removing any logistical barriers for educators.

  • Customized Projects: Activities are tailored to fit different age groups and skill levels, ranging from basic rune pendants for younger students to intricate blacksmithing tasks for teenagers.

  • Inclusive Experience: The forge offers wheelchair-accessible layouts and adaptive instruction to ensure students of all abilities can actively participate. We regularly work with individuals on the spectrum, and are able to adapt our environment to accommodate different sensory needs.

  • Convenient Location: We are located in beautiful downtown Frankenmuth. This places us within walking distance of multiple desirable destinations including:

    • The Michigan Hero's Museum that is entirely devoted to the wartime and in-space experiences of men and women from Michigan.

    • Bavarian Inn Restuarant: Lunch for 100? No problem. Just 10 today? They've got you, and in a story book environment to boot.

    • Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is world famous as the world's largest Christmas store and still remains, an admission free destination.

  • Large Group Friendly: Now into our 6th year in Frankenmuth, we are well practiced at working with large groups.

    • We have proudly hosted the Clio Homeschool Face-To-Face Middle School and High School students for the past 4 year, holding two semester long sessions every Fall and Winter.

    • We are able to accommodate over 300 individuals with a same day make and take experience.

You and your students are invited to step into an adventure that starts at the dawn of time. Let us help you make it affordable and simple for your school. Start now by downloading our free Field Trip Kit.
